The Avian Flu Pandemic

Frequently Asked Questions by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

As Attorney General of Texas, my duty to the citizens of this great state includes preparation for some of the most catastrophic events facing our world today. One such issue affecting our citizens is the threat of an Avian Flu pandemic.

Texas has always been a leader in planning and preparing for disasters. The threat of an outbreak is real. The projected loss of life is extraordinary. As government agencies begin to address this issue, I felt compelled to provide answers to the questions we believe will be most frequently asked in an effort to aid local, state and county officials plan for such an emergency.

This fall, I asked my staff to look at the issue of how we, as an agency and a state, should prepare for the possibility of an outbreak of Avian Flu. My office has prepared a set of "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)" (PDF) and common forms to assist with contingency planning. These FAQs are designed to answer common questions on topics such as emergency declarations, child support, consumer fraud issues and court orders.

This website contains information invaluable to emergency contingency planning. It is my hope that these resources will assist you in your efforts to plan for emergencies that threaten the citizens of this state.

Sincerely,
