|Indictment against Maria Flores|
Those who perpetrate voter fraud are victimizing and intimidating the elderly, said Attorney General Abbott. This violates the law and is simply another form of elder abuse.
The indictment applies to violations of Chapter 64 of the Texas Election Code, which prohibits marking a ballot for another person without their consent. Assistant Attorney General Lance Kutnick presented the case to the grand jury.
The Attorney General’s investigation alleges Flores escorted voters into polling sites and illegally marked ballots for them.
The indictment marks the first felony indictment and follows nearly a dozen misdemeanor indictments entered since last summer.
In February, a Texarkana City Council member and two other women were indicted for illegally handling the mail-in ballots for seniors and other voters during the November 2004 general elections. A month earlier, the mother of a March 2004 primary candidate for Reeves County sheriff and another woman were indicted on similar charges.
